Seoul, March 17, 2008

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to bring to your attention the 6th annual International Summer Session (ISS) in Korean Studies taught entirely in English offered by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul. This yearˇŻs five-week session of the International Summer Session in Korean Studies will be held from July 7 - August 8, 2008. (The application deadline is May 23, 2008, but an extension until June 13 can be granted if we are notified in advance that candidate selection is in progress.)

The ISS offers a Korean Studies program suitable for either undergraduate or graduate students from any country who wish to broaden their understanding of contemporary Korean society. Korean language classes at three proficiency levels from beginner to advanced are also offered during the summer program. You will find specific details at the program website [http://summer.hufs.ac.kr]. Students applying for the program should check the online version for updates on course offerings and possible last-minute changes before making their final course selection and summer class schedule.

This short-term, intensive study abroad summer ISS courses should be particularly interesting to two types of students:

a.. students at your university who are interested in Korean Studies / Asian Studies (HUFS ISS summer courses can extend the range of courses offered by your own faculty.)

a.. students of Korean heritage who desire to become better acquainted with contemporary aspects of Korean society

Please note that a tuition waiver of US$500 is being offered to any student majoring in Korean Studies, Asian Studies or a closely related field. Full details are available at the program website
[ [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] or [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ] Regular tuition covers enrollment in two 3-hour courses for 6 credit hours, as well as all co-curricular field trips. (Additional optional field trips will be organized for a nominal at-cost fee.) A student who enrolls for 6 credit hours of Korean Studies courses in the morning may also choose to enroll in Korean language classes in the afternoon. Scholarship recipients for the morning classes will also be granted a scholarship for the afternoon language classes, calculated on the same basis.

The individual participant is responsible for housing, the cost of meals, local transportation, books and study materials, and personal expenses during the program. Experience over the past several years tells us that students should plan on bringing a minimum of US$750-$800 for these expenses for a five-week period in Korea. All participants are expected to pay the initial $50 application fee.

The International Summer Session provides students with a carefully planned curriculum and small classes taught by some of the most prominent scholars in the field of Korean studies, drawing both on HUFS' own faculty as well on the expertise of many scholars from prestigious foreign universities invited to teach for the summer session. Courses are grouped into the following categories: history and politics, culture and society, arts and literature, economy and business, and Korean language instruction.

One unique aspect of the HUFS International Summer Session highly acclaimed by students in previous years is that approximately 50% of the enrollees are our own local Korean students with superior English language skills. The mixture of international and domestic students in the classroom lends a breadth of perspective to all class projects and discussions and provides international students with opportunities to interact with and become friends with Korean peers throughout their summer stay.

Other components of the program designed to enhance students' overall experience include:

a.. ˇ°summer buddyˇ± program to foster interaction with local students,
b.. noontime activities organized and hosted by HUFS students attending the international summer session, and
c.. special lectures, site visits and field trips correlated to the content of the courses.

A transcript of courses taken at the International Summer Session will be issued by Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and upon completing the proper arrangements before departure, students should be able to obtain transfer credits back to their home institution, if desired.

Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) is a private university offering instruction in 42 foreign languages (the largest number in Korea) and area studies at both the undergraduate and graduate level of the relevant regions, in addition to high quality research and education in the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences and engineering. HUFS has academic exchange agreements with 192 universities in 63 countries worldwide and employs over 100 foreign professors who contribute to creating a cosmopolitan academic and social atmosphere at HUFS which is unique in Korea.

We would appreciate it very much if you would bring this program to the attention of potentially interested students, and we thank you, in advance, for your cooperation in this matter. Our faculty, staff and the Korean students at HUFS are waiting in a state of high anticipation to welcome students from our partner institutions overseas to the 2008 ISS program.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Plumlee, Ph. D.
